Cézanne's portraits in Burberry

I wanted to give a more modern transformation to the old paintings of Cezanne so I dressed them in Burberry's scarf and cap. I chose to draw the scarf out of the box to draw attention to the scarf.  Moreover, I painted the scarf and the cap to make them look 3-dimensional. I was inspired by Banksy's graffiti of Mona Lisa holding an RPG.

Life drawings

I visited a life drawing class in my own time at a local art centre. I enjoyed the experience even though it was challenging. During the classes, I experimented with oil pastels on calico as well as coloured paper.

Paper Bag Armour

Being inspired by Davide Reyes' work, I used paper bags to create the garment. This was initially designed to be a long skirt but I was researching on gender fluidity so I adapted it into an armoured top for men.

Fashion illustration

I was doing research on the brand KTZ so I decided to do a few illustrations with the Copic Marker Pen.

Looking Through HIV

This work emphasises the stigma the society has against people with HIV. The strings act as a barrier which prevents people from wanting to know the people with HIV for who they truly are on the inside. I was inspired by Plexus A1 by Gabriel Dawe.

The HIV Mask

This work suggests the idea of how having HIV is like having the mask of stigmas in which once a person sees someone with HIV, they would instantly judge and discriminate them.

My response to "Pain" by Gabriel Dawe

As I was exploring the spiky feature of the cactus that I associated with HIV-positive individuals so I thought that I would be able to use nails to represent the spikes. The "Pain" by Gabriel Dawe which has pins on usual clothing pieces like collar and pant can be used to suggest that fact that people with HIV appear to be a threat to society.

"Hurt"

I created my own material for this garment using latex mixed with red acrylic paints on a plastic film. Then, I peeled them off the plastic film and pasted them together. Moreover, the wrinkled and torn effect emphasizes how people with HIV are hurt due to hostile feelings from society. The raw nature of the material can be related to the raw and abrasion of the skin.

"Consider Killing Themselves" Photographs

I styled, photographed and edited these pictures. I like the fact that there is one light source from the right side which creates the shadow on the left side. This creates a mysterious and dark atmosphere with negative connotations, which is the mood of this project. The weight of the garment is intrinsic to the design and represents the weight of living with stigma.

Pollock's style on Latex and Organza

I was spired by Jackson Pollock's artworks after a visit to the MOMA this late October as I like the expressive nature of his painting. Splashing and pouring paints can really evoke different feelings in which would be helpful for me in coveying the emotions to the viewers.
I realised that by just using pure latex as a fabric, it is quite hard to sew and they do tend to stick or break easily so I decided to apply the mixture of latex and acrylic paints on top of the organza to add more structure to the material but yet still retain the rubber-like and reflective characteristics of latex.

"Hurt II" Draping

Using a piece of calico, I started to drape and pin around the mannequin. I really like the overlapping fabrics on the shoulder in which I tried with the latex on organza. In these pieces, I am exploring the texture and the form of the material.

Further Development on "Hurt II"

In this garment, I developed my understanding of texture and from the previous experiments with draping fabric. I used darts and pleats to create areas of texture and interest.  I also incorporated stitch patches of materials to create negative and positive spaces within the garment.

"Hurt II" Photographs

The material is designed to cling to the body and create reflective surfaces. As the garment lengthens towards the knees it disintegrates and becomes very fragile. These design features were integral to the creation of the garment.

Fashion Illustrations

The left side is a design based on the word "Afraid", using the defensive nature of Porcupine as the inspiration. On the right, the design is based on the phrase " Like I was caught up in a dream" and "Numb" so I used strips of leather and velcro to restrict the movements of the wearer.

" Numb" and " Caught up in a dream" Photographs

This shows how constrained and hopeless some people with HIV can be. Having been rejected by society even their loved ones, they would feel so insignificant and worthless. the bindings are a physical representation of an emotional state of being.

"Into Tears" Photographs

This piece suggests how HIV stigma has emotionally affected people with HIV. The second photograph, I turned so that it shows the movement of the embroidery threads that I added to resemble the crying tears. It is already extremely sad to be living with HIV inside their body but they still have to deal with the social stigma against them.

Inspirations

This piece is based on " Beyond These Rooms" at Tate Liverpool. in the above slides, I am exploring the play of light and shadow through the material. On the right are the shapes, forms, and colours inspired by Iris Van Herpen Spring 2019 Coutour.

Digital design

Using Photoshop, I Juxtapose the shapes and patterns I created in my sketchbook to create designs for new garments. The design is supposed to convey the idea of how people with HIV feel emotionally drowned by their illness. I created designs based on the ripple effect of water.

"Drowned"

This is the final piece for my HIV Stigma project. As I was inspired by Iris Van Herpen, I chose to use organza as the main material and consists of 4 different colours. In order to add structure, I use rigged papers for framing. By layering the organza, it mimics the ripple effect and at the same time creates a beautiful gradient of colours. The pleats on the top was a development from the "Hurt II" and they also create a ripple-like effect.

"Drowned" Photoshoot

I decided to use the context of the swimming pool for this photo shoot as I wanted to create a connection between the water and the garment. Using Adobe Lightroom, I edited the photos to create a dark and brooding mood to the photographs.
